How might Penicillins affect birth control pills?

Penicillins, a class of antibiotics, may decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills. This interaction is primarily due to the way certain penicillins can alter the normal gut flora, which can subsequently affect the reabsorption of the hormones contained in oral contraceptives. When the gut flora is disrupted, the metabolism of estrogen is altered, leading to reduced levels of the hormone in the bloodstream. This can compromise the contraceptive efficacy of the pills, potentially leading to unintended pregnancies.

While not all medications cause this interaction, the risk is more significant with certain antibiotics that induce changes in gut bacteria.
